Can your existing lighting become smarter?

Some fittings may be retained. Start with the existing driver, wiring and the control functions you actually need.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Can I upgrade existing lighting without replacing every fitting?

Sometimes, but the existing equipment must be checked before a retrofit route is chosen. Record the luminaire and driver models, control wiring, access above the ceiling and the functions you want to add. Existing equipment may be reusable; other fittings may need a compatible driver or replacement. Wireless control can help where new control cabling is difficult, but it does not make every lamp compatible. Verify a proposed combination in a representative area before extending it. Send equipment photos and a marked-up plan for an initial discussion.

What to check before choosing a solution

  1. Define the change people need

List the desired result by room: automatic switching, dimming, daylight response, presentation scenes or simpler wall controls. Separate the essential functions from future options.

  2. Record the equipment already installed

Collect luminaire and driver model references and ask the local installer to identify the present control interface. Confirm ceiling access, control cabling and which areas can be worked on together.

  3. Review the possible routes

Existing compatible controls may be reusable. Other fittings may need an approved driver change or replacement. A wireless gateway can offer another control route in suitable systems, but still requires compatible devices and a site assessment.

  4. Agree a representative trial and scope

Choose a representative area to check the proposed equipment and control behaviour. List supply, installation, programming, tests and handover separately so that quotations cover the same work.

ILLUSTRATIVE SCENARIO

A project discussion: adding scenes to an existing office

An office wants a presentation scene and automatic switching while retaining as much lighting as possible. The equipment survey comes before selecting a gateway or quoting replacements. An example room-control schedule can help the owner and installer agree what should happen. This is a planning scenario, not an installation we claim to have completed.
