LED lights flickering when dimmed?

Check the lamp, driver and dimmer as a combination. Changing to DALI alone does not guarantee the result.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Will DALI stop my LED lights flickering when dimmed?

DALI is a control protocol, not a guarantee of flicker-free lighting. The result depends on the LED module, driver, dimming method and operating conditions. Before changing the system, identify the lamp, driver and dimmer, check their specified operating limits and test the proposed combination at the lowest brightness you intend to use. A different protocol may offer useful control functions, but the equipment still needs to match. Send the model numbers and describe when the problem occurs.

What to check before choosing a solution

  1. Describe the symptom

Does the flicker happen only at low brightness, during a fade, when switching on, or at full output too? Record which fittings are affected and whether the behaviour changes when other loads are used.

  2. Identify the complete equipment chain

Collect the lamp or LED module model, driver model and dimmer or gateway model. Ask the installer to check the intended dimming interface and the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance.

  3. Compare like-for-like options

For phase-cut equipment, check the supported dimmer and load range. For DALI, check the driver’s output, dimming range and required functions. Compare the proposed complete combination, not only the protocol name.

  4. Test the brightness people will use

Agree the lowest working brightness and the scenes that matter. Test a representative fitting with the intended control equipment before committing to a project-wide replacement.

ILLUSTRATIVE SCENARIO

A project discussion: low light during presentations

A meeting room works at normal brightness but becomes uncomfortable when dimmed for the screen. The first useful information is the equipment list and the presentation setting at which the problem appears. A room-control brief can then record the intended behaviour and the sample test. This is a planning example, not a completed customer installation or a measured product result.

A detail you can verify

Use the selected manufacturer’s data alongside the project drawings. The reference below supports the general guidance; it does not certify a proposed product combination.
